Synopsis
Philippe Noiret et Claude Chabrol : le rapprochement de ces deux grands noms tient de l’évidence, tant ils ont de points communs. "Masques" concrétise ce duo idéal, après plusieurs rencontres manquées ; Chabrol avait déjà proposé le rôle de l’ignoble Paul Decourt dans "Que la bête meure" (1969) à Noiret, qui ne se sentait pas « assez mûr ». C'est ensuite le rôle-titre des "Fantômes du Chapelier" (1982) qui lui échappe. C’est finalement le rôle magistralement hypocrite de Christian Legagneur qui permet ici à Noiret et Chabrol de collaborer enfin.Le célèbre présentateur-producteur de télévision Christian Legagneur est sollicité par un jeune journaliste, Roland Wolf, qui désire écrire un livre sur lui. Legagneur invite Wolf à venir travailler au calme, chez lui, à la campagne, où il vit entouré d’un staff impressionnant. La suite des évènements durant ces quelques jours permettra à Wolf de démasquer tout le monde, avant de se démasquer lui-même !
