Synopsis
Une école primaire iranienne au milieu des années 1980. Dès qu’un conflit éclate, les élèves concernés sont envoyés dans le bureau du directeur qui les interroge de façon à ce qu’ils reconnaissent d’euxmêmes leur part de responsabilité, toujours selon le même cérémonial : interrogation, aveux, repentir.—
Pour réaliser Les Élèves du cours préparatoire, Abbas Kiarostami s’est inspiré à la fois de ses précédents travaux au sein du Kanoon et de sa propre expérience de parent. Dès le premier jour de la rentrée scolaire, le cinéaste a installé une caméra dans cette école d’un quartier pauvre de Téhéran, afin que les élèves s’habituent à sa présence. Conçu de manière très ritualisée, le film se déroule entre la cour et le bureau du directeur, sans jamais entrer dans la salle de classe : l’école est ici envisagée comme un lieu de socialisation et non d’apprentissage théorique. Le spectateur voit se forger la personnalité des jeunes enfants et leur capacité de jugement, grâce à la figure du directeur qui les amène subtilement à l’introspection. Comme à son habitude, Abbas Kiarostami intègre à ce dispositif documentaire de purs moments de poésie, comme ce lâcher de sacs plastique dans la cour, que le spectateur se prend à regarder avec des yeux d’enfants.
