Synopsis
Mata Hari, une belle danseuse javanaise, devient en 1914 espionne au service de l'Allemagne. Sur ordre d'un certain Ludovic, elle attire chez elle François Lassalle, afin de subtiliser les précieux documents dont il est détenteur. Elle réussit mais s'éprend de l'officier. Une nouvelle mission lui incombe. François, désespérément jaloux, rompt. Mata Hari, d'abord réfugiée en Espagne, revient en France dans l'espoir de le retrouver…Réalisateur de films, Jean-Louis Richard est également le premier mari de Jeanne Moreau. Mariés pour élever leur fils dans le respect des convenances, ils ne formèrent jamais un couple classique. Se séparant et se retrouvant au gré des hasards et des tournages, ils ont formé un fascinant duo dont Serge Rezvani s'est inspiré pour composer Le Tourbillon de la vie. François Truffaut, qui adorait cette chanson, la fit chanter par Jeanne Moreau sur le plateau de Jules et Jim et rencontra un grand succès. Un an plus tard, Truffaut retrouve Jeanne Moreau sur le plateau de Mata Hari, dont il a écrit le scénario sur-mesure pour elle.
Accusés d'avoir plagié un scénario de Edgar Ulmer, les producteurs durent retirer le film de l'affiche après trois semaines d'exploitation. C'est donc un film rare de Jean-Louis Richard, souvent injustement oublié dans la carrière de Jeanne Moreau, Jean-Louis Trintignant et François Truffaut.
