Synopsis
Dans les années 1930, Kansas City est une ville prospère et animée qui a échappé aux effets de la Dépression et vibre au rythme ininterrompu de la musique de jazz. Mais un climat de violence et de corruption règne à la veille des élections…Au même moment, la jeune télégraphiste Blondie O’Hara échafaude un plan désespéré. En kidnappant Carolyn Stilton, l’épouse d’un conseiller du président Roosevelt, Blondie espère obtenir de l'aide pour sauver son mari, Johnny O’Hara, petit malfrat tombé aux mains du légendaire truand Seldom Seen. Dans un contexte de violence morale, une complicité inattendue naît entre les deux femmes.
En 1934, Robert Altman avait 9 ans et vivait à Kansas City. On retrouve de nombreux éléments de son enfance dans ce film. Il explique qu'il a choisi très tardivement les morceau de jazz, qui ont été filmés à part. Seul un morceau a été tout de suite une évidence : Solitude de Duke Ellington, qui rythme le générique de fin. Lorsqu'il était enfant, la servante de la famille avait fait écouter cet air à Altman en lui disant : "Ecoute-moi ça, c’est la plus belle musique au monde".
A plusieurs reprises, il est fait allusion au très populaire feuilleton Amos'n'Andy, duo de Noirs incarnés par des Blancs. Surtout connus à la radio, ils ont également été incarnés en dessin animé.
