Synopsis
En 1894 Alice Guy Blaché a 21 ans quand Léon Gaumont l’embauche comme secrétaire. C’est le début d’une carrière impressionnante : d’abord opératrice de prise de vue, elle devient vite réalisatrice, et bientôt productrice parmi les plus influentes d’Amérique. Son œuvre novatrice et inspirante est réhabilitée dans le documentaire Be Natural de Pamela B. Green. L’occasion de revenir sur les inventions de cette pionnière, souvent attribuées à ses assistants (comme Louis Feuillade, qu’elle embauche en 1905 chez Gaumont), voire à son mari.Dans Falling Leaves, mélodrame poétique, Alice Guy raconte l’histoire d’une jeune héroïne souffrant de tuberculose. Outre son sens inné de la composition -chaque plan joue sur la profondeur de champ pour créer un jeu de cache-cache -, Alice Guy, pionnière en matière d’innovation, utilise la colorisation pour créer des tableaux bucoliques d’une mélancolie folle.
L’histoire ? La petite Trixie Thompson est effondrée lorsque le docteur annonce que sa sœur, malade, sera morte avant la chute des dernières feuilles d'automne. Elle décide de prendre le docteur au mot et de rattacher les feuilles aux arbres…
